Coach Wallets Owner Review Style It Three Ways

Coach: A Complete Guide to the Brand in 2026

In 2026, Coach, a major name in American fashion, is posting strong sales growth. The company was first set up as a modest leather workshop, became a handbag specialist and today sells clothing, footwear and accessories in stores across the globe. Its central idea has remained constant for decades: well-made leather goods priced below the traditional European luxury houses. That niche has been described by a federal court as accessible luxury, a market that is distinct from mass-market fashion and from true luxury.

This guide walks through how Coach began, who owns it and who runs it, how big the business has become and what it sells. The guide also covers how a full-price coach store differs from a coach outlet, a point that confuses a lot of shoppers. The prices given are observed market prices instead of a formal price list, and figures are dated to their sources.

How a Manhattan Leather Loft Became an American Label

In 1941, a small family-run leather workshop was set up in Manhattan, and Coach traces its roots to that workshop. In Coach’s own account, six artisans labored in a loft on 34th Street, turning out men’s wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods. Handbags came later, and so did the Coach name, which goes back to about 1960 or 1961. Contrary to what is sometimes said, Miles and Lillian Cahn were not in fact the original owners of the workshop.

By around 1950, Miles was overseeing the factory, having joined the business with Lillian in 1946. They acquired the business from its original owners in coach knitwear 1961, taking charge of the business. Reportedly, it was Lillian Cahn who suggested adding women’s handbags, a move that reshaped the company. The leather finish called glovetanned leather, based on the way a worn baseball glove softens with use, is attributed to Miles Cahn.

When Bonnie Cashin Remade Coach

The designer most closely linked with the early years of Coach is Bonnie Cashin, who served as its first lead designer. She is reported to have been hired under contract rather than as an employee, and she was not a co-founder of the company. Her start date is a small puzzle, because Coach’s own pages give it as both 1961 and 1962. Her exit is well established: she left Coach in 1974.

In 1964 Cashin introduced the brass turnlock closure, which Coach says was inspired by the toggle on the top of her convertible. She is also recognized for brighter colors, side pockets and coin-purse details, all of which relaxed the brand’s look. Today, the turnlock stands as one of the most recognizable Coach details, and it appears on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.

Owners, Listings and the Birth of Tapestry

Sara Lee Corporation acquired Coach in July 1985. The company went public in October 2000, and Sara Lee is reported to have fully exited the following year. Coach’s Signature collection, with the “C” monogram, launched in 2001, so the pattern is a modern addition rather than a mid-century heritage motif. The parent company, Coach, Inc., was renamed Tapestry, Inc. on 31 October 2017, when its ticker moved from COH to TPR.

The Coach brand, its stores and its products kept their names; it was only the parent company that changed its name. Tapestry offloaded Stuart Weitzman to Caleres in a transaction completed on 4 August 2025, ending an ownership that began when Coach, Inc. bought the shoe label in 2015. In 2026, Tapestry has only two brands, Coach and Kate Spade, Coach being by far the more substantial of the two.

How the Capri Deal Fell Apart

On 10 August 2023, Tapestry announced an agreement to buy Capri Holdings, which owns Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo. In April 2024 the Federal Trade Commission contested the deal, and it asked a federal court for a preliminary injunction to block it. On 24 October 2024, a federal judge in the Southern District of New York approved that preliminary injunction. It was not a final ruling on the merits, but it stopped the companies from closing while the challenge was ongoing.

The court’s decision recognized that there is an accessible luxury handbag market, separate from both mass-market bags and true luxury. On 14 November 2024, Tapestry and Capri ended their agreement, stating that the legal process was not likely to conclude before their February 2025 deadline. The acquisition was never completed, so Tapestry owns no Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo business.

The People Running Coach at Present

Joanne Crevoiserat is chief executive of Tapestry, the parent company. The brand itself is headed by Todd Kahn, Coach’s CEO and brand president, who took the job on an interim basis in July 2020 and has held it permanently since April 2021. The creative side rests with Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was made public in June 2013.

Vevers reportedly showed his first Coach collection in February 2014, and he is still Coach’s creative director in 2026. Before Coach, he is reported to have been creative director at Loewe following a stint at Mulberry. Archive designs have been reissued and vintage shapes reworked into new bags such as the Tabby, reflecting how Coach has used its archive under his direction. His Fall 2026 collection was unveiled on 11 February 2026 at the Cunard Building in New York.

Coach in Numbers

Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ended 27 June 2026 provides the sharpest picture of Coach’s scale. Coach’s net sales totaled $6,914.7 million, up 24% on the prior year, while Tapestry as a whole reported $8,004.2 million. Put another way, approximately 86% of group sales were produced by Coach.

By the end of that fiscal year, Coach ran 973 stores under direct operation, 336 of them in North America and 637 internationally. A figure of about 1,299 stores also appears in some sources, but it counts every Tapestry store rather than Coach alone. An increase at a mid-teens percentage rate in the average unit retail price of Coach handbags during the year was also disclosed by Tapestry. Some of that increase, the company has said, reflects fewer promotions.

Handbags, Apparel and Footwear: What Coach Sells

Structured icons are paired with soft, slouchy leather in coach handbags today, as handbags remain the heart of the business. Drawing on a 1970s archive shape, the Tabby debuted in 2019; the Rogue first appeared in 2016 and returned in 2021; and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, followed in August 2024. The Empire Carryall was first seen on the Fall 2024 runway and then reached stores in February 2025. At the high end, a Rogue 25 in alligator was observed at $8,000, the highest bag price observed, but the Kisslock Frame Bag, said to have opened the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350. Pieces from the Coach Originals line are not vintage: these are new bags that reissue archive designs.

Leather varsity jackets and leather-and-wool versions, a first all-shearling varsity jacket for the brand, peacoats and suede coats all featured in coach clothing for Fall 2026, proof that ready-to-wear is now a serious part of the offer. On the same runway, the label also added blazers, flared trousers, A-line skirts, floor-length dresses with high collars and all-gender jacquard knits. Footwear includes sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker, and fashion press noted loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall. Coach also runs Coach (Re)Loved, launched in 2021 and reported to include trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, plus Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand launched on 20 April 2023.

Coach Store, Coach Outlet or Online: Where to Buy

The current collections are carried by a full-price coach store, with the largest flagships trading under the Coach House name. The New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue reportedly launched in 2016, and a new Coach House at 645 Fifth Avenue has been reported as planned for 2027. London’s Coach House on Regent Street also opened in 2016, and in the UK the brand sells through Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis as well. Whether you want a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket, the full-price range is the place to find the latest season.

Coach Outlet, which is Coach’s own official channel, includes outlet stores as well as an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website. In 2014, Coach’s head of investor relations was reported as saying roughly 85% of outlet merchandise was produced for the outlet channel, but that figure is dated, and Tapestry has since talked about bringing some full-price product into outlets. Claiming that outlet bags are invariably worse, or exactly the same as boutique bags, stretches past the public evidence. Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet are among the UK outlet store locations. Shoppers searching for the brand sometimes enter “couch” or “cosch”; before buying, check that any site promising huge discounts is really Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
